AAUA Clinches Maiden Ondo State University Basketball Championship Title

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), has emerged champions of the maiden Ondo State University Basketball Championship held at the indoor sports hall of the Akure Sports Complex.

AAUA edged past Achievers University, Owo, in a tight and thrilling final, securing a 38 to 34 points.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), finished in third place defeating Ondo state university of science and technology Okitipupa OSUSTECH by 51-30 points.

The event, tagged “Our Ease Students Fest One Point Zero” and themed “Empowering Students to be Agents of Change”, was organized to commemorate International Students’ Day.

Director of the Ondo State Student Athlete Development Office (OSSADO), Olabode James, said the championship was designed to discover and nurture young basketball talents across the state.

Speaking with journalists after medals and trophies were presented, the Senior Special Assistant to the Ondo State Governor on Student Affairs, Hon. Kevin Solomon Olaolu (KSO), noted that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa supported the initiative to bring youths together, develop their skills and channel their energy toward meaningful engagements.

Mr. Olaolu, impressed by the level of competition, added that the championship would become a continuous event aimed at uniting students and providing purposeful engagement for Ondo youths.

Reacting to the outcome, head coach of Achievers University, Mr. Tosin Olajubutu, described the tournament as an opportunity to assess his players, motivate the team, and restrategize for future outings. He appealed for consistency in organizing such competitions, stressing that regular championships will help reduce social vices among youths.

On his part, AAUA coach, Oni Glorious, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance and commended the state government for the initiative. He attributed the victory to hard work, dedication and rigorous training, assuring that his team will always be ready to represent the institution in future tournaments.

In addition to medals, trophies and cash prizes, Yusuf Oluwaseyi of AAUA was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and received a cash reward and an award.

Several students union leaders and students of the participating universities and basketball fans were at the sports complex to support their team.
