Sunshine Stars head coach, Bobola Akinfolarin, has issued an apology to the club’s supporters after his team fell to a narrow 1–0 defeat against Edel FC in their NNL league opener at the Awka City Stadium.
The decisive moment came in the 32nd minute when Ifeanyi Aniji’s deflected free kick found its way into the net, handing Edel FC all three points despite what Akinfolarin described as a committed and tactically disciplined display from his team.
Speaking after the match, the Ondo-born coach expressed deep disappointment, insisting that Sunshine Stars’ performance did not warrant a loss. He accepted full responsibility for the setback and promised a swift response ahead of the team’s first home fixture of the season against Gateway FC on Saturday.
“We came with a clear tactical plan and the boys executed it well, but unfortunately we couldn’t convert our chances,” Akinfolarin said. “It’s painful because the goal we conceded was deflected, and on the balance of play we didn’t deserve to lose. I take full responsibility for the result, and we will immediately work on the areas that need improvement.”
Akinfolarin urged fans to remain supportive and keep faith in the team’s process, assuring them of a stronger performance in their next outing.
Sunshine Stars now turn their attention to their upcoming clash in Akure, where they hope to bounce back and secure their first win of the campaign.
