The Ondo State Head of Service, Chief Segun Odusanya, has described the media as an indispensable partner in the success of any government, saying effective governance depends largely on keeping the public informed of government policies and programmes.
Odusanya made the remarks on Tuesday during separate engagements with the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akure.
Receiving a delegation of the SNB on a courtesy visit to his office, the Head of Service said the media remained the primary channel through which citizens became aware of government activities and development initiatives.
According to him, government efforts would amount to “working in the dark” if they were not effectively communicated to the people through the media.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting media professionals in its employment, including providing opportunities for career progression and appointments to senior positions within the state civil service.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters in Ondo State, Ven. Nelson Fadoju, congratulated Odusanya on his appointment and commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for what he described as a worthy choice.
Fadoju appealed for greater recognition of media professionals in the state, particularly through appointments to the position of Permanent Secretary, while pledging the association’s continued support for the government’s policies and programmes.
Later, during a visit to the NUJ Press Centre in Alagbaka, Akure, Odusanya commended journalists for their coverage of government activities and urged them to sustain objective and balanced reporting.
He assured members that the government would continue to value its partnership with journalists and provide the necessary support to media personnel employed by the state.
In his response, the Chairman of the Ondo State Council of the NUJ, Prince Leke Adegbite, said Odusanya was the first Head of Service to visit the NUJ Press Centre since the late Alaba Isijola did so about two decades ago.
Adegbite expressed appreciation for the visit and pledged the union’s continued cooperation with the state government.
He, however, appealed for improved welfare and working conditions for journalists in the state, including the recruitment of additional personnel and the appointment of qualified media professionals to Permanent Secretary positions.
