The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State chapter, has frowned upon the indiscriminate salary reduction of players and officials of Sunshine Stars F.C. at a crucial time when the team requires all hands on deck in its bid to return to the elite league.
Sunshine Stars are currently sixth in Group A of the Nigeria National League (NNL) table, with 10 points from eight matches played.
“The association found it preposterous that the management of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), at this critical juncture and without adequate explanation to players and officials, would reduce their salaries ahead of the second stanza of the second-tier league,” the statement read.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its maiden 2026 Congress held in Akure, the state capital, the association congratulated Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and the people of the state on the recent celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Ondo State.
However, the association expressed displeasure over the omission of sports icons who have represented and brought honour to the state over the past 50 years from the anniversary celebrations.
According to the communiqué, “The association expressed plans to organise an event to celebrate outstanding Ondo State indigenes in sports, in collaboration with various sporting associations and federations.”
SWAN also urged sports stakeholders in the state to work collaboratively to engender sports development, particularly in football, where it has been observed and alleged that the ODSFA the parent body of Sunshine Stars and Sunshine Queens F.C. is not working in harmony with other relevant associations to achieve success.
The Congress further noted with serious concern the absence of a befitting stadium in the state capable of hosting national events, a shortcoming it said has caused the state to miss out on economic opportunities.
