Former General Manager of the Ondo State Sports Council and South West Representative on the Board of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation, Dr. Henry Babatunde, has described the election of Olumide Oyedeji as Secretary General of the World Olympians Association (WOA) as a major milestone for global sports governance and athlete advocacy.
Babatunde said Oyedeji’s emergence into the leadership of the World Olympians Association reflects growing international recognition for leaders committed to athlete-centred development and sustainable sports administration.
In a congratulatory message, he noted that the appointment places Oyedeji among a select group shaping policy and direction within the global Olympic movement, while also projecting Nigeria’s presence on the international sports administration stage.
According to Babatunde, Oyedeji’s elevation is the result of years of consistent service to sports development, youth empowerment and athlete welfare, both within and beyond the competitive arena.
He said Oyedeji’s leadership profile is defined by his passion for nurturing young talents, strengthening institutional structures in sports, and creating long-term opportunities for athletes during and after their active careers.
Babatunde expressed confidence that Oyedeji’s tenure will bring renewed focus to critical issues such as athletes’ welfare, post-career transition programmes, mentorship initiatives and stronger collaboration among Olympians across continents.
He added that Oyedeji’s inclusive leadership style and service-driven approach align with the evolving needs of the global sporting community.
“This election is a clear testament to the trust Olumide Oyedeji commands among Olympians worldwide and the confidence in his capacity to lead with vision and integrity,” Babatunde said.
He expressed optimism that the World Olympians Association would witness significant growth and impact under Oyedeji’s leadership, particularly in advancing global sports development and protecting the interests of athletes.
