Rangers International were on Sunday crowned champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for a record-extending ninth time after defeating Ikorodu City 2-1 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

The Flying Antelopes, led by coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, produced a composed display to secure the victory they needed to seal the title in front of a lively crowd.

Rangers began brightly and were rewarded in the 30th minute when Chidiebere Nwobodo opened the scoring for the visitors.

Nwobodo struck again 10 minutes after the restart to double Rangers’ advantage and put the Enugu side firmly in control of the contest.

Ikorodu City, who were also chasing victory to strengthen their hopes of securing continental football next season, pulled a goal back in the 58th minute through Moses Ali to set up a tense finish.

However, Rangers held on to secure all three points and confirm their status as NPFL champions once again.

Elsewhere, Rivers United finished the season in second place following an emphatic 3-0 victory over Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Chijioke Mbaoma scored twice for Rivers United, while Aniekeme Okon added the third goal in a dominant performance from the hosts.
