The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has called for the speedy completion of major road projects across the state, expressing concern over delays on several ongoing works while urging both the Federal and Ondo State governments to intensify efforts to improve critical infrastructure and prevent flooding.
The resolution formed part of a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s monthly congress held on Thursday, 30 July 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre, Pen Crescent, Alagbaka, Akure. The congress, presided over by the State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, deliberated on political, economic, environmental, security and members’ welfare issues.
The congress commended the Ondo State NUJ leadership for what it described as its commitment to protecting the interests of members, as well as the ongoing renovation and beautification of the union’s Press Centre.
It also praised the leadership for its consistent support for the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in organising programmes, including children’s events and sporting competitions.
On the state-owned Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) Media Group, the union welcomed the improvements recorded at the organisation and appealed to the Ondo State Government to ensure that its television station is carried on cable networks to enhance service delivery and create better career opportunities for staff.
While acknowledging the Ondo State Government’s ongoing road construction efforts, the congress expressed reservations over the slow pace of work on key projects, particularly the Akungba,Ikare Akoko, Okitipupa, Igbokoda and Akure, Idanre roads. It urged contractors handling the projects to accelerate work to ensure their timely completion.
The journalists also described the ongoing construction of the flyover on Oba Adesida Road, Akure, as a commendable development.
However, they appealed to the state government to make alternative routes more motorable, especially by clearing and improving Arakale Road, to ease traffic congestion caused by diversions.
The congress further applauded the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the dualisation of the Ilesa,Akure, Owo, Benin Road and the reconstruction of the Akure, Ado Ekiti and Akure, Ondo,Ore roads. However, it expressed deep concern over the poor condition of federal roads serving Ondo North, particularly in the Akoko axis.
The union called on federal lawmakers and political appointees from the area to facilitate the urgent rehabilitation of the Ikare, Ogbagi, Irun Akoko–Ado Ekiti Road and the Owo, Ipele, Isua Akoko, Kabba Road.
On environmental issues, the congress described the recent incidents of flooding in parts of the state as unfortunate and urged both the state and local governments to adopt proactive measures to prevent flooding rather than responding only after disasters occur.
The congress also observed a minute’s silence in honour of veteran journalist, Sir Ademola Adetula, a former NUJ state officer and immediate past Chairman / Editor in Chief of The Hope newspaper, who recently died a few days before his 74th birthday.
Describing the late journalist as one of the finest media professionals produced by Ondo State, the union prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength for his family to bear the loss.
