Hon. Gbenga Olaniyi, the Executive Chairman, Akure South Local Government on Wednesday gave bursary to students of tertiary institutions who hails from the local government.
The bursary was distributed through the executive of National Association of Akure Students [NAAS].
Olaniyi, while giving the bursary to the students at the council secretariat, said the gesture was to assist indigent students of the local government.
According to him, this will complement the state government’s efforts at repositioning education in the State.
“This programme was initiated as part of our commitment to support the aspirations of prospective tertiary education seekers.
“The programme has been rested in the council before it was resuscitated by my administration.
“None of these young people are children of the elite and some of them are very brilliant.
“We chose to empower them to liberate their minds and make them better citizens who will resist the urge to engage in social vices.
“I have said it and i am reiterating it that we won’t stop supporting our students to be great in life.
The council chairman added he had decided to take the financial burden off their parents, adding that education would eradicate criminality and make the youths more responsible.
The students body later presented the council Chairman with an award in recognition of his support for education.
