Ondo State will face hosts Edo State in the men’s football final of the 2026 Niger Delta Games, while the women’s team will compete in the third-place play-off after a narrow 1–0 semi-final defeat to Delta State.

The Ondo men’s team, led by former Sunshine Stars coach Banjo Adepoju, secured their place in the final with a commanding 3–0 victory over Bayelsa State. The decisive clash is scheduled to hold at the Crescent Football Arena in Benin City.

Adepoju’s side has enjoyed an unbeaten run en route to the final.

They opened their campaign with a 1–1 draw against hosts Edo State, defeated Rivers State 2–0, and sealed qualification with a dominant semi-final performance against Bayelsa.

Ondo asserted control early in the semi-final, with Idowu Omosebi breaking the deadlock to set the tempo.

Kehinde Oluwole doubled the lead with a composed finish before Olowogbeluega Oluwaseyifunmi added a third to complete a comprehensive victory.

Speaking after the match, Adepoju attributed the team’s success to discipline, preparation and unity, while appreciating Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the State Sports Commissioner for their unwavering support.

“This victory is not just about today; it reflects the hard work these boys have put in from day one,” Adepoju said.
“We respected Bayelsa, but we believed in our structure, strategy and strength. The players executed the game plan perfectly.”

The tactician emphasised that institutional backing has played a vital role in the team’s progress.

“The belief and commitment shown by the Governor and the Sports Commissioner have greatly motivated the players. We are determined to repay that trust with the trophy,” he added.

Adepoju, a CAF Licence C coach, previously served as assistant coach of Sunshine Stars, where he helped the club qualify for the NPFL Super Six. He also managed the team in an interim capacity before handling Rising Stars, Akure City FC and Adamimogo FC.

Armed with qualifications including an Advanced Certificate in Coaching and diplomas in Sports Science and Sports Psychology, Adepoju has blended tactical discipline with mental conditioning to shape a balanced Ondo side.

“Experience matters in tournaments like this,” he noted. “I believe in developing players mentally and physically, and the results are evident on the pitch.”
He further highlighted unity within the squad as a cornerstone of their success.

“This is a team built on trust. Every player understands his role. We attack together and defend together. That unity has brought us this far.”

With the final against Edo State approaching, Adepoju insists his team must maintain focus and hunger.
“We respect our opponents, but we believe in ourselves. By God’s grace, we will give Ondo State something to celebrate.”
