Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State on Monday rewarded three indigenes of the state who were part of Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons squad at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a total of N60 million and a house.

The beneficiaries included defender Oluwatosin Blessing Demehin, team media officer Mary Akinsola, and team secretary Mary Oduboku.
While hosting the trio in Akure, Aiyedatiwa announced a cash gift of N30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba Ile in Akure North to Demehin. Akinsola and Oduboku were each gifted N15 million.
The governor said the gesture was in recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title win in Morocco and a show of support for excellence in sports.
“I extend special congratulations to Oluwatosin Blessing Demehin, a daughter of the soil and a very talented player, who was part of the victorious team. Your contributions to the team’s success are truly acknowledged and appreciated,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He also commended Mary Akinsola for her tireless efforts in promoting the Super Falcons’ story to the world and praised Mary Oduboku for her behind-the-scenes dedication and administrative excellence.
“To the three of you, I say you have made us proud. Your achievements are a testimony to hard work, talent, and perseverance. You’ve shown that with determination and focus, anything is possible,” the governor added.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and recognition of the team’s achievement, describing it as a morale booster for Nigerian sports.
Also speaking at the event, Ondo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Henry Omoyofunmi, thanked the governor for honouring the state’s sports ambassadors and pledged continued support for sports development across all sectors.
Sunday Dele-Ajayi, Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, described the recognition as historic, noting that this was the first time a state governor would officially honour Super Falcons players from Ondo State.
“We have produced several stars in the past, but this is a first. We are grateful and will continue to support the government in advancing football at all levels,” Dele-Ajayi said.
In her remarks, Demehin expressed deep appreciation for the honour, describing it as a pivotal moment in her career.
“Winning the WAFCON trophy was a monumental progress for me. This hosting makes it even more special,” she said.
“Sunshine Queens gave me the start I needed. There are many more like me in the club, waiting for their own chance. This reward will inspire many more girls to dream big.”
She reaffirmed her commitment to furthering the growth of women’s football in Ondo State and Nigeria.
