Jesus FC of Ondo have emerged champions of the inaugural Jomav 5-Aside Football Tournament after a thrilling final against Akure-based Velocity FC. The match ended goalless in regulation time and was decided via penalties, with Jesus FC triumphing 3-2 in the shootout.
The tournament, held at the Tofowomo Arena in Akure, featured 25 competitive teams from across the state. Ogbu FC, also from Akure, secured third place with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over BBFC.
A total prize pool of ₦1 million was shared among the top three teams. Jesus FC walked away with ₦500,000, runners-up Velocity FC received ₦300,000, while Ogbu FC earned ₦200,000 for their third-place finish.
Dotun Fajulugbe, a representative of the headline sponsor, Jomav Homes and Properties, expressed satisfaction with the success of the maiden edition, noting that it created a platform to showcase football talents across Ondo State.
“We are delighted to be part of the success story of this maiden 5-a-side Football Challenge. Bringing together football talents from across the state has been truly fulfilling. We can’t wait to be part of the next edition,” Fajulugbe said.
Also speaking, Dayo Johnson, Ambassador of the Tofowomo Sports Arena, emphasized the facility’s broader goal of developing grassroots sports talent across various disciplines.
“Our aim is to make this arena a hub for sporting excellence. Beyond football, plans are underway to host a Table Tennis Tournament in August. It promises to be another exciting sporting spectacle,” Johnson stated.
The successful staging of the Jomav 5-Aside tournament marks a promising start for grassroots sports development in Akure and sets the tone for even more community-driven competitions in the near future.
