Two goals from David Joseph were all Sunshine Stars U-19 needed to secure a 2–1 victory over Grassrunners Football Club, led by former Nigeria international Edith Agoye, in an N-Youth League match played at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.

Sunshine Stars’ youth side wasted no time in taking the lead in the 4th minute of an entertaining encounter. David Joseph rose highest to head home from a free-kick delivered by Miracle Edwin.

Recalled that Sunshine Stars U-19 had earlier defeated Grassrunners FC by the same scoreline in the first leg of the league in Ikene, Ogun State.

Grassrunners responded well to the early setback and pushed for an equaliser. Despite the hosts’ efforts to contain them, the visitors caught them off guard and levelled in the 15th minute.

Undeterred by the equaliser, Sunshine Stars remained composed and stuck to their game plan, moving the ball confidently from defence into the final third.

Grassrunners, however, stayed organised and resisted attempts by the hosts to regain the lead, dealing effectively with Sunshine Stars’ attacking play.

The score remained 1–1 at half-time as the referee signalled for the break.

The intensity continued in the second half, with both teams displaying a blend of physical and tactical football to the delight of the spectators.

Sunshine Stars’ attractive style of play ensured they maintained control in midfield, leaving little room for their opponents.

The decisive moment came in the 55th minute when David Joseph once again rose to the occasion, heading home his second goal from a Khaleel Nurudeen corner.

The result means Edith Agoye, who coached Sunshine Stars during the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League season, has now lost both home and away fixtures to his former club’s youth side.

In her post-match interview, Sunshine Stars head coach Adenike Ayeni praised her team’s determination and highlighted the importance of the victory.

“It was a tough match for us. It is not easy playing against a team led by two former Nigeria internationals, Edith Agoye and Oladimeji Lawal.

“I’m proud of the boys for their fighting spirit. They showed character and discipline, especially when the game became difficult.”

She also commended match-winner David Joseph for his decisive performance.

“David Joseph was outstanding today. Scoring two goals in a game like this shows his quality and confidence. He stepped up when the team needed him most.”
