Benfad Global Football Club of Akure delivered a thrilling comeback performance to overturn a two-goal deficit and defeat Ipole City FC 3–2, clinching the third edition of the Bet9ja Ondo State U-19 football tournament in dramatic fashion.
The final, held at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, lived up to expectations as Ipole City FC struck first in the 25th minute, setting the tone for an intense encounter.
Despite a quick response from Benfad, Ipole City maintained composure and controlled the tempo, heading into the break with a deserved lead.
The second half resumed with even greater intensity, as Ipole City extended their advantage early on to put Benfad under significant pressure.
However, the Akure-based side refused to back down, gradually asserting themselves in midfield and building momentum in attack.
Their persistence paid off in the 70th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a foul in the box. Benfad converted from the spot to make it 2–1, sparking renewed belief. Moments later, they capitalised on a defensive lapse by Ipole City to restore parity.
The momentum shifted further when Ipole City were reduced to ten men for unsportsmanlike conduct. Still, they remained a threat going forward despite the numerical disadvantage.
The decisive moment came late in the game when Benfad scored a stunning 24-yard free-kick to complete the comeback and seal a memorable 3–2 victory.
Earlier, Ondo East United secured third place with a comfortable 3–0 win over Real Ifon.
Trophies, medals, and other prizes were presented to the winners at the end of the competition.
Speaking after the match, Benfad head coach Banjo Adepoju praised both the organisers and his players for their resilience.
“It was a good competition, and the fact that we started from the preliminary stage and remained unbeaten until the final is commendable,” he said.
“I want to commend the players for their determination when they were 2–0 down and their ability to come back and win the match. It was a strong performance, and they deserve credit.
“We learn every day, and I believe they will learn from their mistakes.
They showed great character and attitude in the second half.”
Ipole City head coach Ebenezer Adebayo admitted his side would regroup and work on their shortcomings ahead of future competitions.
Chairman of the Bet9ja U-19 Ondo State Football Tournament, Yomi Seriki, congratulated all participating teams, particularly the eight that reached the Super 8 stage, describing them as winners.
He added that the tournament would continue to grow with new innovations in future editions.
Ondo State FA Chairman, Sunday Dele-Ajayi, also praised the organisers and sponsors for creating a platform for young talents to shine.
“It is a great success, and some players have already been identified for national team opportunities,” he said.
“We will continue to work with the Bet9ja community to sustain the competition.
However, we will also seek increased support and additional sponsors to further improve future editions.”
