The Ondo State Football Association (FA), in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has distributed footballs to selected schools across the state under the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Schools Development Initiative.
Speaking during the presentation at Fiwasaye Girls’ Grammar School, Akure, the State FA Chairman, Otunba Sunday Dele-Ajayi, commended the school for its consistent progress in sports development.
He noted that the association had identified the school as one of the leading institutions in nurturing young talent, adding that it would continue to support its growth.
Dele-Ajayi revealed that some students from the school were already being groomed for higher opportunities.
These include one player being prepared for possible national team selection, as well as two students currently undergoing training to become futsal referees, with prospects of officiating at international competitions.
He urged the students to remain committed to both their sporting and academic pursuits, stressing the importance of education alongside talent development.
According to him, many athletes have faced setbacks due to a lack of education, particularly when dealing with professional contracts.
“There are numerous opportunities in football beyond playing, including coaching, refereeing and administration. However, you must remain dedicated to your talent while also taking your studies seriously,” he said.
The FA Chairman also disclosed that plans were underway to award scholarships to outstanding students of the school.
He explained that the initiative forms part of CAF’s broader effort to promote grassroots football development across African countries.
Dele-Ajayi added that the school was recognised under the programme for its contributions to football development, noting that further support would be provided in due course.
In her response, the Principal of Fiwasaye Girls’ Grammar School, Mrs Temitope Ojoge, expressed appreciation for the gesture and assured that the footballs would be used appropriately.
Similarly, the Principal of Aquinas College, Akure, Mr Adelusi Tai-Debowale, commended the FA for recognising the school with the initiative.
The Principal of Muslim High School, Ore, Mr Akintunde Yusuf, stated that the students would long remember the gesture.
At Otolomi High School, Ikaram Akoko, the Principal, Mrs Olaleye Janet Kikelomo, also praised the initiative and the quality of the footballs provided.
