ONLY HEAVY SANCTION AGAINST PERPETRATORS CAN STOP GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE, SAYS ONDO HOS

Commensurate punishment for culprits of rape and other anti-social behaviours has been identified as the best way to eradicate these menace in the society.

The Ondo State Head of Service, Pastor Kayode Ogundele made this known while receiving the management team of the Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence, (OSAA-GBV) in his office in Akure, the state capital.

Ogundele, who described Ondo State as one of the first states in the federation to pass and assent the Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP Law, re-emphasised the resolve of the government to continue to protect the rights of all citizens irrespective of their vulnerability.

‘This issue of rape that is becoming so rampant, deterrence will only happen when people know there are serious consequences,’ he said.

‘if there is no consequence, if they don’t see people getting life jail or serious long jail terms, people will not hold themselves in check,’ he added.

He said government would support the fledging agency to attain its full potentials any time the needs arise.

The HOS lauded the wife of the governor, Chief Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu for her resilience in fighting the course of vulnerable in the state and her commitment to the establishment of the agency

Earlier in her remarks, the Executive Secretary of the OSAA-GBV, Mrs, Bolanle Afolabi, who lead the visiting team said the visit was to intimate the HOS on the happening in the agency and to solicit his support for attainment of its set goals.

According to her, the agency had successfully carried its awareness campaigns about its mandates to at least 15 local government areas of the state while relevant stakeholders had also received trainings on the VAPP Law through the agency and its partners.

She however solicited for conducive office accommodation for the agency, medical intervention and shelter for victims of gender-based violence.
