Sixteen teams are battle-ready to compete for honour at the second edition of the Crown 74 Cup, which kicks off tomorrow (Thursday) at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, the state capital by 1PM.
Defending champions Saint FC will lock horns with Shinning FC in the opening match of the grassroots football tournament.
The runner-up of the maiden edition, United Army, will take on Benfad Football Academy next week Wednesday in what promises to be a display of grassroots talent.
Saint FC defeated United Army 1–0 in the final of the inaugural edition played at the Ijapo/Housing Field.
According to the draws for the 2025 edition, Shinning FC, Saint FC, New Dawn FC, and Victory Lions make up Group A. FJ FC, SGIC FC, Royal Goldwin, and 99 FC are in Group B. Group C comprises Ibile FC, Mevomovo FC, Wonderland FC, and Elshadai FC. Runner-up United Army lead Group D alongside Benfad FC, Ijapo Ages Stars, and Lion FC.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Gabriel Olatunji, while addressing the participating teams, urged them to cooperate with the organisers and adhere strictly to the rules of the competition.
He said: “I must appreciate all the coaches and club owners for their contributions and continued support for the development of grassroots football in Ondo State. We were together during the maiden edition, and here we are again to kick off the second edition.
“I assure you all of an improved competition as we build on the success of the first edition. We will do everything possible to ensure fairness to all participating teams, because this competition must not be seen as a do-or-die affair.”
Olatunji added that the aim of the competition is to contribute to grassroots football development and to discover young talents across communities in the state.
