Sunshine Queens began their Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) campaign on a disappointing note on Wednesday, falling 1–0 to FC Robo of Lagos in front of their home supporters at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
The hosts started brightly, dominating possession in the opening 15 minutes, but FC Robo gradually settled into the contest. Sunshine Queens goalkeeper Bright Etim made several key saves to keep the game level, yet the visitors eventually found the breakthrough on the stroke of halftime. Marvellous Oladuni rose highest to head home from a corner, giving FC Robo a deserved lead.
Despite making tactical adjustments in the second half in search of an equaliser, the Queens struggled to break down FC Robo’s organised defence. Their efforts ultimately fell short, sealing a frustrating home defeat on the opening day of the season.
The loss has already stirred concern among supporters, many of whom expected a stronger performance from the team.
Olokunboye Alani, one of the fans in attendance, criticised the team’s preparation and overall display.
“It’s been a long time since we watched a live match here. The management must give us a team that will make us happy,” he said. “Yes, it’s the first game, but if we can’t win at home, how do we hope to survive in the NWFL? This is not the best the management can offer.”
Another fan, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed disappointment over both the matchday organisation and what he described as a lack of motivation among the players.
“The management is being misled, and we wish them luck. Some people built a team for a year—you sacked them, disbanded them, and brought in people from retirement, people with no pedigree or readiness to lead the team. We are watching. This is not criticism, but the fact,” he said.
With pressure already mounting, Sunshine Queens will need a swift and decisive response as the season unfolds.
