Sunshine Stars U-19 defeated Akure North 1–0 on Friday in a thrilling semi-final clash of the 2026 Federation Cup, played at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.

The first half ended in a goalless draw, with both sides displaying impressive football to the delight of spectators. Despite Sunshine Stars U-19’s dominance in the final third, Akure North’s defence remained resolute, successfully repelling repeated attacks.

The Ondo State-sponsored youth side employed various tactics in an attempt to break down their opponents’ defence but were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval.

The intensity continued after the restart, with Akure North increasing their efforts and adopting a high-pressing approach in a bid to unsettle Sunshine Stars U-19. However, Coach Adenike Ayeni’s well-drilled side coped effectively with the pressure.

The decisive moment came with 20 minutes remaining, when Amao Daudu scored the only goal of the match, finishing off a fine cross from Edwin Miracle. Miracle, who was outstanding throughout the encounter, beat two defenders before delivering the cross that led to the winner.

Akure North pushed for an equaliser but were unable to break through, as Sunshine Stars U-19 held firm to secure a narrow victory.

The win means Sunshine Stars U-19 have now played two matches unbeaten in the competition and will face Adamimogo in the final.

Adamimogo had earlier knocked out the senior Sunshine Stars team in the first semi-final. Notably, Sunshine Stars U-19 defeated Adamimogo 2–1 in the preliminary stage.

In her post-match interview, Coach Adenike Ayeni thanked God for the team’s achievement, attributing the success to teamwork among the coaching crew and backroom staff.

She also praised her players for adhering to instructions, adding that the team would remain focused on representing the state proudly at the national level.

“It was a very good game from both teams. Our opponents put up a strong fight. It was not a perfect performance from us, and we will continue to improve by going back to the drawing board to address the lapses observed during the match,” she said.

Chairman of the Akure North Football Council, Banjo Adepoju, commended his players for reaching the semi-final, noting the challenge of facing a state-sponsored side like Sunshine Stars U-19.

“The players are not on salaries, yet they gave their best. They did everything possible to contain their opponents, but it was not enough.

It was a very good game for both sides, and I wish Sunshine Stars U-19 success in the remainder of the competition,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to the Chairman of Akure North Local Government, Hon. Johnson Ogunbolude, and former Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Bamidele Ologunloluwa, for their support.
