The Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate for the Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election, Bolaji Omotayo Daramola, has urged Nigerians to embrace attitudinal change as a prerequisite for building a more functional and prosperous nation.
Daramola made the call during an appearance on The Platform, a political programme on Crest 106.1 FM, where he discussed the role of the opposition in Nigeria’s democracy and the prospects for the 2027 general election.
He argued that meaningful political and economic reforms would remain difficult to achieve without a corresponding change in the mindset and conduct of citizens.
The House of Representatives hopeful identified vote buying and vote selling as major impediments to good governance, saying credible elections would only be possible when voters refuse to exchange their votes for financial inducements.
According to him, while politicians who induce voters should be held accountable, citizens who willingly sell their votes also contribute to the country’s governance challenges.
He urged the electorate to prioritise competence, character and integrity when choosing political leaders rather than immediate financial rewards.
Speaking on his ambition to represent Ondo East and Ondo West Federal Constituency, Daramola promised to adopt a people-centred approach to governance if elected, with emphasis on accessibility, effective representation and legislation that addresses the needs of constituents.
He also pledged to surpass the performance of previous occupants of the seat by sponsoring impactful legislation, attracting meaningful federal projects and maintaining regular engagement with constituents to ensure their interests are effectively represented at the National Assembly.
On opposition politics, Daramola described the YPP as one of Nigeria’s most stable political parties, saying it has remained largely free from the internal crises and leadership disputes that have affected many of the country’s larger political parties.
He said the party’s internal cohesion positions it as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
While acknowledging that the YPP is still expanding its national presence, Daramola expressed confidence that Nigerians are increasingly interested in candidates with clear ideas and integrity rather than political parties with established structures.
He said the growing demand for issue-based campaigns and accountable leadership offers an opportunity for credible candidates to gain public support.
Daramola also called on Nigerians, particularly young people, to participate actively in the democratic process by obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards, voting peacefully and holding elected officials accountable after elections.
He said democracy can only flourish when citizens remain engaged beyond election day.
The YPP candidate reaffirmed his commitment to transparent, inclusive and responsible leadership, assuring residents of Ondo East and Ondo West Federal Constituency that, if elected in 2027, he would prioritise their welfare and provide effective representation.
