Uduakobang Monday Peter’s 37th-minute strike condemned Sunshine Queens to a 1–0 defeat in their Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Matchday 13 clash against Ahudiyannem FC at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure on Friday.
The result leaves Sunshine Queens in 9th position with 12 points in the abridged table of 10 teams after 13 matches.
The encounter, initially scheduled for Thursday, was halted after just seven minutes due to a heavy downpour and was concluded at 8 a.m. on Friday.
Following the team’s poor run of form, head coach Kayode Olujohungbe has been sacked and replaced by Coach Tayo Onilude with immediate effect.
Sunshine Queens, who began the 2025/26 NWFL season on a promising note, are yet to record a win since the start of the second round. Their recent results include a 1–0 loss to FC Robo in Lagos, a goalless draw against Delta Queens in Akure, a 2–1 defeat to Dannaz in Lagos, and now another 1–0 loss to Ahudiyannem FC.
The Akure-based side faces a challenging run-in, with remaining fixtures against Abia Angels (home), Remo Stars Ladies (away), a South-West derby against Osun Queens, a trip to face Nasarawa Amazons in Lafia, and a final home game against Confluence Queens.
Meanwhile, fans and sports enthusiasts have blamed the team’s management for the recent struggles, citing the dismissal of the technical crew that secured the club’s promotion to the top flight.
“I have been following this team for a long time, and I’m surprised to see entirely new faces on the bench this season,” said Mr. Onipede Olayinka.
“Those who worked hard to earn promotion were asked to leave. That is not the best practice.”
Concerns over possible relegation are now growing among supporters, with many asking: what next for Sunshine Queens?
In another twist, a post-match meeting between the team manager, coaching crew, and the club chairman reportedly took place without the head coach.
It was gathered that the coach was asked to disembark from the team bus at First Bank Bus Stop, while officials proceeded to meet with the chairman at a hotel in Alagbaka.
He was subsequently relieved of his duties after the meeting. An official statement from the club regarding the dismissal and replacement is still being awaited.
