Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sport and the Ministry of Education, is set to organize a football competition among secondary schools in Oyo state, the football competition will be termed the “ OYO STATE GOVERNORS CUP FOOTBALL COMPETITION”.
The Governor’s Cup is packaged by the Schools Sports Foundation in collaboration with the Oyo State Government and sponsored by Peculiar Ultimate Concerns.
According to the tournament’s leader of delegation Yomi Elijah, who is also the CEO of Kidzfoot Nigeria and Schools’ Sports Foundation, made it known that the aim and objective of the OYO STATE GOVERNORS CUP is to revive school sports in the country,
“The aim and objective is to revive school sports that are already becoming a forgotten issue in the country, the young ones don’t have where they focus so much, we had opportunities when young, so we want to see how to get talents out from the streets.”
Yomi Elijah is a UK Trained Football Coach who has worked with ABS FC, Kogi United, Lobi Stars, and most recently Remo Stars.
The football competition will start with Local Government Eliminations between 13th – 22nd May, 2024,
Zonal Eliminations come up from Tuesday 28th – Friday 31st May, 2024
Screening and Accreditation commence on Wednesday 5th June 2024 While the State Finals (Quarter Finals) will be held at Ikolaba High School with 2 Matches played at the venue on the 5th of June 2024.
Loyola College will also host two 2 Matches on the 6th of June 2024.
The Governor’s Cup Semi-Finals will come up at the Lekan Salami Stadium on the 7th of June, 2024.
The Third Place and Finals will be held on the 8th and 9th June, 2024 respectively at Lekan Salami Stadium while 10th June, 2024 has been chosen as the Tentative date for the Final match.
The competition starts from the Local Governments of the State to the Zonal Stage, comprising the following Zones.
- Oyo
- Ogbomoso I
- Ibadan I
- Ibadan II
- Ibadan III
- Ibarapa
- Oke – Ogun I
- Oke – Ogun II
The competition is open to male students of Public Schools in Oyo State only and only One team is expected to qualify from each zone for the second round.
Students above 18 years of age are not eligible to participate and The competition is open to JSS1 – SS2 students only
The sponsors of the Competition, Peculiar Ultimate Concerns were involved in the remodeling of the Lekan Salami Stadium and have decided to give back to the state by helping the state discover football talent from the schools
PECULIAR ULTIMATE CONCERN was also the sponsor of the Just concluded OSUN State Governor’s Cup.
