The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) roars back to life today, January 7, 2026, and Sunshine Queens are ready to make their mark.
The Akure-based team takes on Abia Angels in a mid-table battle in Aba, looking to extend their impressive away form.
Sunshine Queens have been on fire on the road, drawing in Asaba and Umuahia after their opening-day loss to FC Robo Queens.
Their resilience and determination have been key to their success, and they’ll need it to take on Abia Angels.
Sitting fifth in the table, Sunshine Queens have a strong squad ready to take on Abia Angels, who are sixth. The team has shown it can compete with the best, and they’re looking to prove it again in Aba.
In previous matches, the Queens’ goalkeeper, Bright Etim, has been in top form, and her recent penalty save against Ahudiyannem Queens just before the festive break was a masterclass. She’s been instrumental in the team’s success, and Abia Angels will be wary of her skills.
Sunshine Queens’ recent form has been impressive, with a 2-0 win over Dannaz Ladies at home followed by a hard-fought draw against Ahudiyannem Queens away. They’re looking to build on that momentum in Aba.
Abia Angels, on the other hand, will be looking to upset the visitors and gain an advantage in the league standings. They’re sixth in the table, and a win would move them up the rankings.
The match is expected to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams looking to gain an advantage. Sunshine Queens will be looking to build on their away form, while Abia Angels will be eager to prove a point.
Officials from Cross River State, including Nwafor Jacob Emmanuel, Akpan Edu Michael, and Adula Samson, will ensure a fair match.
Sunshine Queens have drawn two away fixtures, suffered a home defeat to FC Robo, and recorded a home win against Dannaz Ladies. The results place them fifth on Group B of the NWFL table with five points from four matches.
